Drkin pod consists of two families. We saw them for the firs time in 2001.
Drkin unit consists of four orcas: three brother males (AV039, Drkin and male luvenile Shark) and their mother AV041.
Drkin friends unit consists of two females (AV043 and AV046), a young male (AV044) and one juvenile whale (AV045). This family often travels together with Drkin family, so we called them Drkin Friends. In summer 2010 female AV043 gave birth to a new calf
Interesting fact: Killer whale researchers think that families from the same pod had recently descended from a single matriline. So, grand-grandparents of Drkin and Drkin Friends families were probably the members of the same family. With time, the family had separated into two, but they retained close social relationships and a common vocal dialect.
